There were two people involved with the invention of the self-cleaning device used in Nature Flow UV Water/Wastewater Treatment Units. They were Ken Bryer and Tim Prince. Ken Bryer was the owner/operator of a landscaping yard where he heard many stories from his customers about their household sewerage treatment systems and their failure to effectively sterilise wastewater. Having examined the weaknesses of other systems on the market, he set about designing an effective, environmentally responsible treatment system. UV sterilisation was his preferred disinfection method as chlorine came under increasing pressure due to its adverse health effects and poor environmental credentials. UV provided a chemical free method that was reliable and effective however maintenance costs were high. Ken investigated ways to decrease the high maintenance costs and found that much of the cost was associated with keeping the UV thimble clean. So he set about designing a cleaning mechanism - one that would be automatic and non-mechanical. Tim Prince (Ken's son-in-law) helped to make Ken’s ideas a reality. He designed the prototype and built the electrical control box. The two inventors then sought assistance from a professional within the plumbing field to assist with testing the invention in sewerage treatment systems. Brent Greatorex provided the plumbing expertise needed to successfully test and refine the treatment system. They continued on to establish a business – "Waterpac Australia Pty Ltd" and to secure patents for their innovative design. Their research and development continues today, refining and improving their technology. Ken and Tim have successfully brought this advanced technology into the reach of the average Australian, reducing the strain on their pocket and protecting the environment for our next generation. One of the first prototypes of the drinking water unit. Early prototype of portable, solar powered drinking water unit. The Jimboomba office of Waterpac Australia from 1998 until 2002. The "point-of-entry" drinking water unit installed at the Jimboomba premises. Display of the Nature Flow treatment system at the Australian Wastewater Association’s Meeting in 2000.
